The Friday 56 is a blog meme hosted by Freda’s Voice and has three simple rules:
- Grab a book, any book.
- Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader.
- Find any sentence (or a few, just don’t spoil anything) that pulls your attention.
- Post it!
It’s a pretty simple task and is also super fun (especially because i’m always interested to see what sentences I find)!
This weeks book:
The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Publication Date: November 5, 2013
Genres: Young Adult, Mystery, Thriller
Synopsis via Goodreads: Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.
What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides—especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own. Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.
Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.
“‘Cassie it is, then,’ she replied. ‘Briggs tells me you’re one of mine.’
One of hers?
Michael filled in the blank. ‘A profiler.’
‘Don’t sound so enthusiastic about the science of profiling, Michael,’ Locke said lightly. ‘Cassie might mistake you for a seventeen-year-old boy without a strong sense of derision for the rest of the world.’
Michael held a hand to his chest. ‘Your sarcasm wounds me, Agent Locke.’
I freaking looove this quote because it goes to show how perfect Barnes can write entertaining dialogue between characters in her books. Michael is one of my favorites in the bunch and a scene with him is let’s say… never dull. He truly brings some fun commentary amongst the serious situations the characters are put in since this is a pretty wild murder mystery series and things can get super dangerous. The Naturals was definitely an introduction to mysteries and thrillers for me and got me a lot more interested in FBI novels and whatnot. I’d like to think reading them gives me a little more knowledge on the suuuper interesting subject!
So with all that said, if you haven’t picked up this book I would definitely recommend it! It’s pitched as Criminal Minds for the YA world and what can sound more interesting than that??! I’m serious, these books are crazy addicting and what makes them better is that you can finish each book in less than a day since they’re so fast-paced!! Ahh I could babble on about these forever so we’ll just leave it all at that 🙂
Feel free to let me know if you’ve read The Naturals and/or any other cool mystery novels. Until next time,
Happy Reading! ♡
